New collection! 24 Oct 2009 posted by Ville

This is the sixth year for Outo and I must say, it has really been an amazing year.. New York design exhibition, Sauma design exhibition in Norway, crocheting live for business customers on the sea and many many memorable private orders from you! Thank you!

Jussi, the web master of outowear.com has become such a well known photographer in Finland that he struggled to find time for tuning this years outowear.com-site. I must appreciate Jussi because I have seen his trip from taking photographs to amuse his friends to taking photographs for the largest newspaper in Finland and of course winning the prize "Best newspaper photographer -08".
So...this years site was now updated for this autumn, but the site will have a totally new face some time this winter.

But the most important thing is that you get to see the new products I have developed during this summer. There are new colours and shapes, even a new type of yarn!
The new yarn is alpaca wool. It is the most amazing yarn I have ever seen, it is silky smooth but still as warm as regular wool.
One new technique I learned this year was felting. I m pretty excited about it because it combines crocheting and real "hand making". Once the wool is felted I can shape it as I like. I made a new sleeve for iPod, a felted one, which works brilliantly! Just like the good old iPod cover, this cover stops your iPod from falling as well. Because the felted wool is such a solid material, it keeps the iPod in good condition and protects it from scratches and dust.

Today there was an interesting topic in the finnish news, it said that we finns donīt wear enough clothes when the temperature drops below 0! Check out the story here: Helsingin Sanomat
This article is telling about wearing different "layers" but you can see the same that I m seeing in the picture. Not hat at all!
I have seen this happening for years. Youngsters do wear a beanie/hat on winter times but I think it is the mid aged people who avoid wearing hats. Why is that?

People who donīt wear a hat: I can help you! =)

Avotakka, Boat ride, new yarns 30 Aug 2009 posted by Ville

The summer is turning into fall, the temperature is turning down and the days getting darker. It does not necessarily mean anything negative, for it means bright colours on new yarns, new clothing styles and of course lots of crocheting! I have been designing this fall's collection for a while, and I'm thrilled to say that it looks very promising and bright! I'm bringing out more products this year and will use different materials alongside the good old ones.

A lot has been happening this summer. After the trip to New York I got a chance to have my beanies on display at Sauma Design exhibition in Norway. There they were for a couple of months among the best design from Finland.

The last month or so I have been doing gigs. I go on a boat ride where companiesī customers are entertained. They pick their favourite colours and materials and then I design and make them their own individual beanies. It is great fun! I get to meet interesting people and can take aboard some influencing ideas they have got about beanies.

Avotakka, the leading interior design magazine in Finland made a story about handmade interior design. It is now arising as a trend to have something ethical, individual, handmade design in your home. In the story they mention my design and displaye a Bobbed beanie. Wish they had displayed the picture above.

New York City 22 May 2009 posted by Ville

I flew to New York City on 12th of May and attended the Playful - New Finnish Design fair. The city was just as unbelievable as I remembered. There are more people in NYC than there are inhabitants in Finland...

The design fair was great! The place where it was held, Meatpacking district, was something I had never seen before. Film crews, fashion photographers and paparazzies running around. Great restaurants, pubs and clubs!
The exhibition went beyond my expectations. I met some really fantastic people and got some important contacts.
Most important thing I noticed was that there is demand for Outo products. People got really interested in Outo and wanted to hear the story of Outo over and over again.
People seemed to be most impressed by the wide product selection, quality of the materials, the colors and the individuality. Many of them said that they had never seen anything like that in NYC.
Thanks for everyone who stopped by and chatted with me!

If you are from NYC, there is now a place where you can buy your Outo products! At Auto. shop in the Meatpacking district, 803-805 Washington Street. Go and check it out!

Ps. Here is a little clip from Playful made by treehugger.com, enjoy

Next tuesday I pack my bags and head to the United States of America. Outo is dispalyed at the NY Design Week as a part of PLAYFUL- New Finnish Design. Quite an amazing opportunity! There will be eight containers filled with Finnish design at the Meatpacking District. The exhibition is held on 15-18 of May, at same time with the international contemporary furniture fair.

If YOU happen to be around, come and check out the latest OUTO products and say hello!
